These prepositions help us describe where things are. In German, they’re very important for everyday communication.

Important Rules

1. Case Changes When these prepositions answer the question “where?” (location), they take the dative case:
   • der → dem
   • die → der
   • das → dem Example: Die Maus ist in dem (im) Haus. (The mouse is in the house)
2. Common Combinations Some prepositions combine with articles:
   • in + dem = im
   • in + der = in der Example: Die Kinder sind im Garten. (The children are in the garden)
